CHECKLIST: CANDIDATE REFERRAL PROCESS

You can help ensure that your client’s resume will receive the employer’s consideration by following these guidelines:

  1. Review the position with your client and make sure that they are interested in the position. WORC does not want to refer clients to employers unless the client has an interest in the position and knows that they might be expecting a call from the employer.
  2. Make sure that all workforce development professionals who are involved in your client’s case have been consulted about this job opening.
  3. Make sure that your client meets all of the basic job requirements, including criminal background checks, transportation to the job, legal working papers, appropriate educational background, language skills, etc.
  4. Make sure that your client’s resume reflects their interest for this type of job. For example, do not send a resume for a food service job if the objective on the resume says they are seeking a clerical job.
  5. Make sure that the job opening meets the client’s best interests. Please consider the following:
    • Is the commute possible from client’s home to the work site?
    • Is the commute reasonable in terms of time and expense (relative to the level of the job)?
    • Are the work hours acceptable in consideration of other obligations and responsibilities?
  6. Make sure the client’s resume includes a working telephone number and email address. Additionally, please consider the following:
    • Do they have an answering machine to accept messages?
    • If they are putting an email address on the resume, do they have access to email and checking it regularly?
    • Do they have a professional email address?
  7. Make sure that your client is prepared for the job interview process, which can include several interview appointments. Please consider the following:
    • Does he/she have proper clothing?
    • Are they prepared to answer interview questions?
    • Do you they have information about the job they are applying to and the company?
    • Have they practiced their interviewing skills in a mock interview?
  8. Make sure your client has proper documentation for employment. They must take their work-related documentation to the job interview (i.e. Green Card, Social Security Card, Driver’s License, and Passport. Please see the Employment Eligibility Form for additional details: http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-9.pdf).

SUGGESTIONS FOR A SUCCESSFUL REFERRAL

If you were able to answer YES to all of the above questions, you may then

  1. Forward the client’s resume to WORC.
    • One email per referral
    • Subject line should read: Client’s name – job posting number – job title
    • Body of email may include a note from caseworker advocating on behalf of the client.
  2. Keep in mind that your email to WORC will be forwarded to the employer.
  3. Please submit resumes for one job at a time. Resume should be in MS Word format and saved as an attachment to your email. All resumes should be sent to Hoexter@worconline.org. You may submit multiple times on behalf of the same client – but they should each be a separate email referencing the client name, job posting number and job title.
  4. You may call Marcia Hoexter at (703) 769-3709 or if you have any questions.
